Facebook Profile Picture Guard

Facebook announced it is piloting new tools in India that can prevent the misuse of profile picture. The social giant said that the feature was rolled out after feedback they received from users in India. The new feature gives more control to users by limiting who can download and share their profile pictures.

Facebook announced the new Photo Guard tool, aka Profile Picture Guard. Additionally, she revealed Facebook is also introducing designs to profile pictures which the company’s research has shown helpful in deterring misuse. The feature is expected to rollout to users in more countries soon which means that this will be exclusive to users in India for some time. Facebook says users in India will start seeing a step-by-step guide to add an optional profile picture guard. Once applied, the profile photo can no longer be downloaded, shared, or sent in a message on Facebook.

Additionally, people who are not friends on Facebook won’t be able to tag anyone, including themselves, in your profile picture. Facebook also says that it will prevent others from taking a screenshot of your profile picture on Facebook where possible. This feature is currently available only on Android devices.

With the new Photo Guard, users who opt for the new tool will see a blue border and shield around their profile pictures as a visual cue of protection.

A profile picture is an important asset of your Facebook profile. It helps users easily find people they are looking for, and thus make new connections. However, not everyone feels safe to add a profile picture. In fact, according to research conducted by Facebook, the social media giant found that women avoid sharing profile pictures showing their face due to safety concerns. To combat this, Facebook has introduced a new profile picture protection tool for its users in India.

The profile picture guard feature aims to stop people from sharing or misusing your photos. Once activated, the system will ensure that other users can’t download and share your profile pictures. The tool will also ensure that strangers don’t tag themselves in your photos. In the initial phase, the feature is only rolling out to Android smartphone users.

If you are excited about Facebook’s new photo guard feature then follow the below steps to secure your profile photo. Note, not everyone will be able to see the feature immediately, as it is still being rolled out slowly in the country.

  2. You will then see a screen explaining the benefits of the Profile Picture Guard
  3. Click Next
  4. You will then see your current profile photo, complete with the shield symbol, with the option to Save

Method 2

  2. Tap your profile photo

As for the ability to add a design to your profile photo, the option shows up as a prompt on your News Feed, just like Method 1 above. You will see the message Add a Design to Your Profile Picture, followed by the option to Add Design. Once you tap this, you can then select from a range of design overlays, and then click next. The steps are pictured below.

Facebook reveals it developed the new profile picture guard tool in partnership with Indian safety organisations like Centre for Social Research, Learning Links Foundation, Breakthrough and Youth Ki Awaaz.

“Based on preliminary tests, we’ve learned that when someone adds an extra design layer to their profile picture, other people are at least 75 percent less likely to copy that picture,” said Soman. Facebook says that these designs will make it easier for users to report misuse of their profile picture.

Profile picture guard can help protect your current profile picture from misuse. When profile picture guard is turned on:

  • Other people can’t tap Share, Send in message, Share externally or Download from your current profile picture on Facebook.
  • Only you and your Facebook friends can tag your current profile picture.
  • An image of a shield is added to your current profile picture. The shield helps show people that your profile picture should be respected.
