Facebook Launches Own TV Streaming Service

Facebook is reputed to have approached media companies including Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Disney ahead of the launch of a new TV chat device. This device will use the same video calling technology found in its Facebook Portal devices. It has AI Intelligence that allows it to follow a subject around the room.

This social media company is set to launch an updated version of its video chat device Portal later this year.

The device would allow customers to attach a camera to the top of their TV sets which would eliminate the need of a dedicated video chatting device. The smart camera enabled device is also powered by Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa and comes with front cameras.

Facebook is working on new form factors that would be released soon. Code named Catalina, the launch could provide a threat both to the Apple TV box and the new Apple TV+ service, also slated to debut in the next few months.

The Facebook Portal has a 10 inch display, while there is a 15 inch display on the Portal+.

The devices offer hands-free voice control and allow users to start a video call simply by saying “Hey Portal”.
